Debut Trailer

We are very proud to present the debut trailer for Reset. Everything you see in the trailer is straight from the in-game engine, no up-ressed textures, geometry or effects. What you see is what you will get. Except hopefully a little bit better since we’re not even in alpha yet. This is however a big milestone for us, and we are going to be concentrating more on the gameplay side of things next.

Ladies and gentlemen, Theory Interactive presents, Reset Debut trailer.

Amazing trailer.. nice music that fits… and the animations.. very nice for an indie :)

Pulled out really well the way the foliage grow in fast forward. And very nice close-up detail!

Welp, this definitely got my interest.

Any clues for what the game will be about?

  1. Wow. This looks like it’s going to be great!
    Love everything in this trailer!!

Amazing Visuals, and a slightly touching Trailer as well. When it said “3.. 2… 1…” and switched to the arm I was leaning forward waiting to see if the finger twitch I was expecting would happen.

Love the way you showed time passing as well, with the Trees growing up.

Have you guys made the engine from scratch? Very impressive visuals.

    Jeah, Looks extremely good!

  2. My guess would be that you play an organic life form of some kind (probably human) that is stuck inside a robotic exoskeleton that has been inactive for a long time.

That’s what it looks like to me at least.

Can’t wait for it to come out!

Very nice visuals, looking forward to more details about this game.

P.S. You might want to turn off related videos on embedded YouTube player :)

  3. Awesome stuff guys. Can’t wait to see the final product.

  4. This looks just extraordinary, and on reading your design manifesto I can safely say I’ve never wanted to be a part of something so much in my life. The design and integration of the narrative and systemic elements sound almost exactly like the topic of my dissertation, a part of game design that fascinates me, and the art direction and technology behind it all is stunning. If you even need a newly graduated digital animation student to outsource to for lighting, asset creation, animation, anything, to heap tasks upon, work with, be worshiped by, then0 please please let me know.

    With admiration,

    • Baffled by your kind words. We are working on a bootstrap budget so we can’t hire or outsource. Enthusiasm is one of the key elements, so if the situation changes, we’ll let you know :)

You know guys, there is a organization set up by Slightly Mad Studios that might help you a lot in funing the project: They develop their own Project CARS racing sim there publicly to foum members and so far its going really good with almost a million Euros collected.

PS: Fantastic trailer, love the detail and the athmosphere. I d definitely invest in this project!

Awesome! Also, is the music composed by you guys or did you get a complete song and used it just for the debut? if so, can i get a name? :)

Beautiful trailer and the graphics look amazing. I also really like the idea gameplay-wise. I remember playing a 2D flash-game with similar idea…

I just found out you are finnish developers, makes me proud :D Finnish devs have been on fire in the past few year.

    • Finn devs rule!

        • Saulo
        • April 27th, 2012 3:19am

Damn, that’s true! The only other game this year that has managed to grab a hold of me was Legend of Grimrock, which is another indie game by a finnish developer.

By the looks of it, you guys are gonna take over the gaming world real soon. Specially after Reset is out. Can’t wait.

        • Actually Almost Human is our neighbour and the devs our friends, so there must be something in this part of the world.

Wow… that can’t be a coincidence… and seems to be this gonna be the very first game that I ever pay for… although buy Legend of Grimrock it’s a great temptation. Even though just two person are making these so interesting game, I hope you could finish it before 2013, and also you can sell licenses of that fantastic Praxis game engine to raise funds to your cause.
Cheers pals! Hope see you soon with more news!!!

Is this really real time no smoke and mirrors? This looks absolutely phenomenal, almost pixar quality level. I can’t believe there still exists someone out there that is willing to push what the pc’s of today can do, thought that everyone’s souls were consumed by the devil (i.e. the consoles)!
Thanks a lot for this, really needed to find a gem in a sea of poo!

Looks stunning, really sparked my interest. Just to clarify, does the “in-game engine” mean real time or is it pre-rendered?

    Dear Alpo & Mikko,

Your debut trailer touched me to the core. Mesmerizing vision of the future paired up with stunnigly beautiful music: what a powerful combination! The trailer alone was enough to put your project on the very top of my list of anticipated games. And when I read more about it – about the strong emphasis on story and atmosphere – I fell in love.
Please, guys, keep the blog updated and feed fans like me with more info whenever you can. “Reset” is looking absolutely amazing!

Extraordinary! I have already shared this incredible debut trailer with several gamers. I would like to know more about the engine, as well. Would LOVE to be a beta tester for this one. I have missed quality puzzle games ever since MYST and RIVEN.

Like just about everyone else in this thread, I think that this game is absolutely stunning visually. The orchestration, the cinematics, the setting, the premise… all of them reach out to me; they don’t just coexist like in some other games, but mesh together into a masterpiece of light and sound. You guys have taken my interest.

Speaking of the masterpiece of light and sound, what hardware did you render this trailer on? Was the render done real-time? I’m interested, because the only games I’ve seen with this sort of realism has been Battlefield 3 (especially the plane mission) and Crysis (1 with realism mods and 2, DX11) and those take beast computers to run.

    • You don’t know how much it means to us to connect with people through our piece. Thank you.

And yes it is real time, what you see is what you will get.

Any chance we can have a link to a high quality 1080P download? As amazing as the YouTube video is, I want to see it in all it’s glory without the typical YouTube “meddling”.

Absolutely phenomenal work guys. Keep it up!

    • We’re looking into setting up a download, it’s a pretty big file. Stay tuned.

        • unknown
        • May 20th, 2012 2:38am

Any news on the download. Would really like to so it in all it’s beauty instead of the crappy YouTube version. I don’t know if it’s the bit-rate or the codec, but for rendered video’s it always sucks. Maybe it’s an idea to release it as a Torrent. You won’t run into bandwidth/traffic problems that way (or at least less)

    • April 26th, 2012 11:51pm

I’d like to see some in-game footage before I believe that the trailer was actually in engine and not pre-rendered. Let’s see a walkaround in realtime of those environments

This game looks amazing! The type of gameplay seems like it will be revolutionary and finally a fresh type of game. My graphics card cringed when I read that that trailer was in game engine footage. Will modern day gpus be able to handle this game?
I will most definetly pro order or buy this game when you guys get it done!

    • Yeah, unable to give specific details but we’re working from DX10 basis, so that should give you some direction.

I watched the trailer and I loved it, awesome stuff! I’m not a big games fan but the trailer combined with the fact that this is going to be a puzzle game has me interested.

Btw, I loved the graphics on the monitors in the robot, I want that Operating system on my pc! Lol :D

Looks amazing, can’t wait to get details! Especially on the gameplay.

I hope you also get to talk about some of the technical details of how you are achieving those graphics and the kind of hardware that you are using to do it. Really this game is so exiting I can’t wait to get any details lol.

    • April 27th, 2012 10:25am

    • April 27th, 2012 11:07am

Ok, you definetly got my attention.

  11. Awesome trailer. That’s inengine with game assets but I can see a “Render offline” button in your editor screenshot, so the question is “Is that trailer rendered offline with your engine? or can we expect that kind of IQ in realtime game?”

    • What you see is what you will get. The button in the editor is for writing frames to disk cleanly and unpacked, without the need to resort to fraps or other of the sorts.

  12. fantastic trailer, cool game concept. Thumbs up! :)

    • April 27th, 2012 2:01pm

    Fantastic job – inspirational.

I know it was just the first trailer and you’re still in pre-alpha, but maybe you can have the vegetation actually germinate? Instead of scaling up tree meshes and grass textures, maybe have the greenery grow more as they would in real life? Very hard thing to do technically of course, but if you nail it, it’d be an absolute masterpiece. Still looks great of course as is, but pushing that envelope will definitely be profound.

    • Thanks, good feedback, vegetation is important in the gameworld and it is still worked on.

    • Ersto

and by the way! in one of the blog posts you say that you don’t have a lot of money. so if the cash flow stops, maybe you should consider starting an donation. Many people seems to like the idea of the game and the trailer, so you might some help on the road if it gets poor!

    • Encouraging words my friend. Yeah it’s too bad we can’t apply for kickstarter from Finland.

        • Citan85
        • April 29th, 2012 6:12pm

Came across this title via IGN PC’s front page story. Great job just making their front page and an awesome job so far. This reminds me how I always wanted to get into video game design, but once I learned how my mind works better with network/OS/app admin and not coding I went down that route.

If you ever need someone with expertise more on the technical admin side I’d be willing to provide whatever support I can for no compensation. Thanks for helping me remember why I love video games so much.

    • No thank you for getting the kick out of the same things we do. This all makes it worthwhile.

Ahh, it was just two guys. Damn, sorry. :D Gamasutra tricked me.

  13. I find it hard to believe this is the work of two men. Absolutely amazing and inspiring. It is heart-warming to see this, and makes me want to get better as well!

Truly compelling. I care about that sitting robot, and I don’t even know why. /bravo.

  14. I have this gaming blog where I pick a trailer of the week. After I saw this amazing trailer there could be no doubt: this is it! It’s absolutely breathtaking. Trailer of the Week is my way of showing appreciation for the hard work that goes into making these, and you can check it out here:

Continue the good work, Theory Interactive :-) I can’t wait to play the game!

Utterly Exquisite, a beautiful clip in and of itself even without a wonderful game coming up behind it. I want to have it now! When will it be released? Will we be waiting years or months? Is there any kind of kickstarter/ donation thing we can sign up to to make it come sooner?

    Congrats of good work.

What liblary is engine based, DirectX or OpenGL?
Also on what machine do You run it?

    • DirectX, DX10 based, too early to give specific requirement. We have basic i5 rigs and current gen graphics cards.

I don’t know how two people are going to go about putting in the man hours to create something of that quality as a full blown title, but I’m certainly interested in finding out.

Ok that was the best trailer i have ever seen in my entire life. How the heck are you paying for this? I am assuming that you need donations? Ever thought about bringing your project to Kickstart? Just post your trailer there and maybe some refferences to some big gaming sites like kotaku and bam the project gets funded. And with the money from the funding project you can hire more staff?

This all is just my vision and i don’t know if you read this but I am dying to play this game. I want this right now:)

    • Thanks, a humble bow to you sir. We can’t get Kickstarter in Finland, but we are looking into other similar possibilites.

3rd time watching the trailer, good job to the both of you’s. though im wondering how you guys are going to make the story line fold out! there is nothing out there that i appreciate more than a mind blowing story line! visuals are just the topping on the cake! ^_^ also nice that dx10 was used to create this work of art because i will deff be able to run it with little no to no fps drops. and im sure that since this is indie you wont be greedy with your beta testing! im so sick of high end games only handing out a hand full of betas when there are thousands of bugs that need to be caught and only a few of the beta testers actually try to help out! sorry for the long comment but this game has me itching for more. :)

Love the music in the trailer, it really sets the mood to it. Is the music going to be same type throughout the game? I guess you are using synth and computer to make the music, cause it don’t sound quite right. Have you thought of using live orchestra?

Anyway, good luck trying to bring the same mood and emotions to the game itself.

Wow, the graphics look insane! Nice work, guys!
Holy moly, those graphics look good, better than Crysis! Can’t wait for this!

    • Javier Diaz
    • April 30th, 2012 7:27am

Amazing trailer, do you guys have any plans to release the graphics engine in some “Crysis” kind of way?

    • No plans to license, but we are planning to have some tools to allow for user created content.

  15. Guys, respect. I love everyting in your project, the graphics and music of course, and moreover, tha fact that you are two guys, in tune on everything, a complementary team. Your project seems amazing, i work in the videogame industry and i must admit, your rpoject is the most exciting for a long time.
You are capable ! And i’ll follow you and spread the words the most i can.

    good work.

Love the music in the trailer, it really sets the mood to it. Will it be the same kind of music throughout the game? I don’t mind if so.

I guess you are using synth and computer to make the music, cause it don’t sound quite right. Have you thought of using live orchestra?

The video reminded me of 3dmark 11 with close ups and depth of field effects. Well, no wonder consider your backgrounds.

Anyway, good luck trying to get the same mood and feeling to the game itself.

    • We are planning to have a variable set of music that deepens the atmosphere and the mood in the game. Yes synthetic orchestra, live orchestra not financially possible.

wow, the game trailer looks phenomenal, and the music you choose to go along with it, is perfect. Not sure if it’s just me but the trailer to me conveys some sort of emotion, very provocative . Keep up the amazing work , can’t wait to see the final product.

Incredible! I’ve been waiting so long for an inspired and beautiful adventure game to come along. There have been so many near-misses over recent years, so reading through the comments and seeing that you promise to remain independent, and that you’ve decided to build the engine from the ground up to get the right feel makes me so happy!
I am officially a fan, and sit with crossed fingers hoping to be a beta-tester when the time comes.
Keep up the amazing work guys.

    Great trailer. Tight and cinematic.

Is this all rendered real-time with the in-game engine or pre-rendered?

  16. People need to start reading the text as well as watching the trailer.

The number of times its been asked whether the trailer is realtime or not. “What you see is what you get”.

Sounds like a motto at this point.

If you guys wanted to spark my interest, then you have done a masterful job at that.

The melancholic music, coupled with the post apocalyptic setting really made me feel what this apparently organic life form would feel once it woke up within its vessel (the robotic shell).

I am truly looking forward to give you my money :)

Man, good news and a great trailer. Haven’t heard of your game until now. Could be the game I have been waiting for for so many years.

I thought the next step in graphics will be raytracing. But it’s OK to wait a little longer for that if games start looking as great as RESET.

Best wishes to you and your baby. Now I will have to start saving the money for a capable graphic card and CPU. ^^

I’m completely speechless. To see this game coming from a newly-formed studio and not being published by big major publisher or developer just astounds me. I’m completely amazed and surprised to see this trailer. It is very touching and looks sooooo amazing. I can’t wait to see how this game turns out. Hopeful to see gameplay video in 6 months maybe? I have a question. I’m sure not many people will appreciate this question. I own a crappy computer and an Xbox-360, are you guys only developing this for the PC, or are you also working on an Xbox-360 port? If you could reply, it would be much appreciated.

    Dear mother of god…

That trailer was intense! You guy’s give me hope in the future of gaming.

It is such a shame that mega corps. like EA and Activision neglect PC gaming and just focus on consoles and give us a sub-par crappy console to PC port of a game.

You guys are showing what can be done when development is first started in PC. Well, at least graphics wise.

I can’t wait to see some actual gameplay to see if it is my kind of game. The trailer didn’t really showed me what kind of game I can expect.

Anyway, keep up the great work. It’s impressive to see what you made in only 10 months.

If you peeps would be on kickstarter I would pledge instantly!

  17. Seriously guys what a stunning trailer :) I am running it in repeat mode. Sound of rain is so soothing that I could keep playing it on and on :) Really loved lighting effects, textures, hey actually I liked everything in it.
I am more than happy as its on PC not on some console. Can’t wait to see more videos soon.

  18. What an amazing trailer! I hope you’ll get a major backing to help you with the marketing side for the game.
